He was equally comfortable with the dirty work of eliminating his rivals before they did the same to him. "Griffith did many heroic things during the Hundred Year War that benefited the people in the short term, but it was not for the people's sake it was to increase his own reputation and smooth the way for his own rise. Even before the Eclipse, Griffith never talked about his dream in terms of helping the people of Midland for him it was his desire to find out if he was chosen by God to rise above his lowly birth, to see what one man could achieve with his own talent or charisma." "On the hill of swords he told Guts that he didn't feel any guilt about what he did to them, and that he will still get his own kingdom nothing has changed. Does this guy sound like a philanthropist!?" He called Guts a mere insect and said that he was beneath his notice. When Guts met him again as Femto in the Black Swordsman Arc, he urged The Count to damn his daughter Theresia to the vortex so he could prolong his own life. That wasn't just a one-time thing it represented a permanent change in his personality, a conscious decision to cut himself off from his humanity by embracing evil. He betrayed his followers to be devoured by ravenous Apostles and suffer torment in the vortex of souls, and he went out of his way to torture Guts and Casca instead of giving them a quick, merciful death. " No matter how you look at it, Griffith gave himself over to evil when he sacrificed the Band of the Hawk. To think that the new Griffith would put the good of humans above his own ambition for even an instant is to ignore the fact that he is literally on Team Evil." The God Hand has no purpose except to perpetuate human suffering, and they openly admit that pure evil is their goal. Remember Conrad spreading the plague with his rats? Griffith doesn't do anything to stop them because he doesn't object to killing innocent people it's part of his plan so that the people will turn to him as their savior. "You also really can't ignore the fact that he is a member of the God Hand, who have been causing thousands of deaths by famine and plague. He only saves people when it's convenient for growing his own power if somebody is in his way, he will quietly arrange their murder even if they're a good person." "Something that people usually forget to mention is that Griffith sent Zodd and Grunbeld to murder Flora, a good witch who was protecting the humans in her area. U/Azurepark said it best in an old thread. Griffith is a multifaceted character, I think painting him as just a villain does a disservice to how the story grew as a whole. With emotions comes the ability to feel emotional pain and regret.Īnd he deserves every last bit of that pain. Some sadness, some pain, some actual humanity. I legit thought he managed to leave all his humanity behind. He's seemed more or less emotionless since The Eclipse. Maybe with more pages it'd feel less like I'm reading too far into this. Maybe with more pages Griffith could show some more emotion. I suppose it really was a sacrifice then. A sadness that after all the conquering, the wars, and his own "sacrifice", that just spending time with close ones (like he used to in the Band of the Hawk) was what was most important to him. However, I can think of worse things than the last panel being Griffith, at least in my view from reading this, finding more satisfaction and humanity spending time with his old friends than from all that he has accomplished.
